The BL’s Blast Off has become a right of passage for young surfers. The unique surfing event for under 14-year-olds is an annual event held on Sydney’s Northern Beaches in the September school holidays.
1988 World Surfing Champion Barton Lynch developed the coaching format for the event to help support and encourage young surfers as well as providing them top-level coaching and insights that they might never experience otherwise.
“The most important part about Blast Off is to not refer to the groms as competitors,” said BL. “Our format allows for each of the kids to surf three times throughout the four days, with the final day being the only real competitive part of the event. After each heat, the kids get personal coaching tips from the judges and video analysis from the top coaches in the Hurley Surf Club van.
“The festival vibe of the week is what has made it so successful. The energy you feel from not just the kids, but the siblings and parents is like nothing I’ve experienced at any other event.”
In its 13th year and a sell-out each year, BL and Hurley have teamed up with The Perfect wave to take the event international.
“There’s such demand here in Australia for the event, we’re busting at the seams at capacity each year, so we were trying to create new ideas for people. Taking it internationally was a natural next step.
The Hurley BL’s Blast Off is now taking expressions of interest for the first Bali edition to be held 13-20 April 2019, coinciding with the school holidays.
“Together with The Perfect Wave and Hurley we’ll be taking over Bingin, Dreamland with an option of a beach on the east-side condition dependent. The waves are absolutely perfect.
Centred at S-Resorts Bali in the heart of the Bukit Peninsula the event will be mobile amongst some of the Bukit’s best grom-friendly waves like Bingin, Dreamland and Balangan. Imagine holidaying in an intimate luxury resort, hanging out with BL and the Blast Off Community and surfing each day amongst the perfect, long and hollow lineups.
The Perfect Wave has combined with S-Resorts Bali to offer exclusive packages to Blast Off competitors and their families. Enjoy a program of exclusive activities each evening combined with transport to the event each day and stylish, quality accommodation. The Perfect Wave also offers packages at Bali’s best properties from the luxury of Six Senses Uluwatu to the eco-style of the Suarga Padang Padang.
“It will be the beginning of the Indo surf season and a great time of year to hold an event in Bali. For most of the kids Bingin will be the best wave they have ever surfed, and they’ll get to do it with just a couple of other kids out – what a dream.”
BL’s Blast Off Bali will run the same coaching format as the Sydney event, however, with just 100 spots up for grabs, including 20 spots for local kids, there’s no doubt it will book out quick.
