What an incredible year that was. The 12th annual Hurley BL’s Blast Off presented by GoPro had one of the best years yet with perfect conditions for the 360 groms who were registered to attend.
Barton Lynch said, “This year there has been no exception to the talent of Australia’s up and coming surfers. We were truly blown away by the level the kids were surfing at. We were watching the 6’s divisional finals on Friday and the girls, some of who were four and five years old, were dropping into bomb sets up to four feet. The waves were nearly triple overhead for them. There was no fear, it was excitement and pure froth on their faces. It makes it all worth it when you see that kind of stuff.”
But it wasn’t just the 6’s who were pushing the limits of surfing in Australia, every division drew out gasps and excitement from the judges, announcers and the beach crowd as the groms watched in awe the powerful and dynamic manoeuvres and even landed some air-reverses.
For Barton Lynch, the kids and crew it’s not all about the surfing. The surfing is what brings us all together but it’s about the fun that we all have.
“It really is all about the smiles, the friendships and the love that is shared at Blast Off. We refer to it as the ‘Blast Off spirit’ and being part of one big family. Blast Off is one big family event.
“Families travel from as far as Western Australia and New Zealand to attend each year. There’s a convoy of families who drive down from Noosa (and the Noosa Boardriders Club), and up from Bells Beach (and the Torquay Boardriders Club).”
